ABSTRACT

The objective of this work is to evaluate the use of modified atmosphere and chitosan as an alternative to chemical treatment in postharvest conservation of 'Tainung 1' papaya under refrigeration. The experiment comprised of completely randomized blocks with four replications, one fruit per replication, with a 2 × 4 × 4 factorial design as follows: two types of packaging (with or without polyvinyl chloride [PVC] stretchable film, thickness of 17 µm), four treatments (control, 2% chitosan, 4% chitosan, and prochloraz fungicide with 33.75 g a.i.·100 L1), and four storage periods (0, 7, 14, and 21 days) at 10 °C and relative humidity (RH) of 90 ± 5%. The variables evaluated were mass loss (ML), external appearance, titratable acidity (TA), soluble solids (SS), vitamin C, reducing sugars (RS), and total sugars (TS). The storage of 'Formosa' papaya under refrigeration at 10 °C and RH of 90 ± 5% associated with PVC provided a low percentage of ML and longer conservation time of apparent quality (up to 7 days) in relation to fruits with no storage in PVC. The external appearance of fruits was preserved for up to 14 days by the PVC + 4% chitosan treatment and for up to 21 days by the PVC + prochloraz fungicide treatment. The treatment PVC + 4% chitosan associated with refrigeration is efficient in maintaining fruit quality. It is, for up to 14 days, a viable alternative to the use of prochloraz fungicide for postharvest conservation of 'Formosa' papaya.

ABSTRACT

HIGHLIGHTS Arsenic is considered as one of the highly hazardous elements in the environment and a serious carcinogen for the human health. An enzymatic method has been described by using arsenite oxidase for arsenic detection. Residual activity of the immobilized enzyme was 43% of the initial activity after being recycled 10 times.

Abstract Arsenic is considered as one of the highly hazardous elements in the environment and a serious carcinogen for the human health. More attention has taken towards the arsenic due to its presence in ground water in India, China, Bangladesh, Inner Mongolia and several other regions of the world. It's been a challenge to remove arsenic due to the lack of its efficient detection approach in the complicated environmental matrix. The proposed method describes an enzymatic method for arsenic determination using arsenite oxidase, which catalyzes the oxidation of arsenite to arsenate. Hence, a colorimetric PVC strip with immobilized arsenite oxidase has been developed to detect the arsenic concentration and also having potential for the field-testing. The influence of the optimal conditions i.e. pH, temperature, storage stability, and reusability of free and immobilized enzyme were evaluated and compared. The results have shown that the stabilities were significantly enhanced compared with free counterpart. Residual activity of the immobilized enzyme was 43% of the initial activity after being recycled 10 times. We approve that this novel low cost immobilized carrier presents a new approach in large scale applications and expected to act as a model for establishment of indigenous arsenic sensor in miniature form.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Compared to an equivalent sized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) double-lumen tube (DLT), a silicone DLT has a shorter endobronchial segment. The aim of this study was to compare the incidence of clinically significant displacement of left-sided PVC and silicone DLTs after a positional change to a lateral position from a supine position and determine its effect on the need for DLT repositioning for successful lung separation in patients undergoing thoracic surgery. METHODS: One hundred eight adult patients requiring one-lung ventilation were randomly divided into group P (PVC DLT, n = 54) and group S (Silicone DLT, n = 54). The position of the DLT was observed before and after lateral positioning to assess the effect of the position change. The incidence of clinically significant displacement (>10 mm) of DLT was compared between the groups. RESULTS: DLTs were clinically significantly displaced in group P (17/48, 35.4%) and group S (18/52, 34.6%) after lateral positioning (p = 0.933). A proximal displacement (31.3% [group P] and 25.0% [group S]) was more common than distal displacement (4.2% [group P] and 9.6% [group S]), with no significant intergroup difference (p = 0.494). After lateral positioning, critical malposition of DLT with bronchial herniation to the right main bronchus was 8.3% (group P) and 7.9% (group S, p = 0.906). CONCLUSION: Left-sided PVC and silicone DLTs produced comparable incidences of clinically significant displacement and, consequently, required similar rates of repositioning for successful lung separation after lateral positioning.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the incidence and amount of air inflow during central venous catheter (CVC) insertion. METHODS: This study was an experimental study aimed at designing an apparatus to implement blood vessel and blood flow in the human body. A 1.5-m long core tube with a Teflon tube, suction rubber tube, and polyvinyl chloride tube were made. This core tube was assumed to be the blood vessel of the human body. Blood was replaced with a saline solution. The saline solution was placed higher than the core tube and flowed into the inside of the tube by gravity. The CVC was injected 15-cm deep into the core tube. The air was collected through a 3-way valve into the upper tube. The experiments were carried out by differentiating the pressure in the tube, CVC insertion step, and diameter of the end of the catheter. The experiment was repeated 10 times under the same conditions. RESULTS: The amount of air decreased with increasing pressure applied to the tube. Air was not generated when the syringe needle was injected, and the amount of air increased with increasing size of the distal end catheter. CONCLUSION: To minimize the possibility of air embolism, it is necessary to close the distal end catheter at the earliest point as soon as possible.

ABSTRACT

As we all know, DEHP is seriously harmful to human health and consequently has been acquired critical attention. DEHP is able to migrate from PVC medical devices for the non-chemically bound to PVC, thus contact with user and patient. The DEHP migration is influenced by various parameters. In order to assess the security of PVC-tubes medical devices scientifically of DEHP migration, we develop an experimental model by analyzing the parameters comprehensively and systematically, taking into account the clinical practices. For example, assessing the security of DEHP migration from infusion sets by utilizing this model.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Tracheal intubation in a hemorrhagic airway is a difficult procedure because the visibility can be obscured by blood or vomitus. Several devices and methods have been developed to overcome such obstacles, but they are not available at all practical sites. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the time and success rate of tracheal intubation according to the type of suction tip used in a hemorrhagic airway manikin model. METHODS: This study was a randomized crossover manikin simulation study. We recruited 18 emergency physicians to perform intubation with suction using a Yankauer suction tip and a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) catheter suction tip in a hemorrhagic airway manikin model. We then measured the time and success rate of intubation for each suction tip. RESULTS: The mean intubation time using the Yankauer suction tip was 42.3 seconds, and the mean intubation time using the PVC catheter suction tip was 91.1 seconds (p < 0.001). Two cases of esophageal intubation occurred when the PVC catheter suction tip was used (success rate, 88.9%). In contrast, there was no esophageal intubation when the Yankauer suction tip was used (success rate, 100%) (p=0.217). CONCLUSION: Intubation of a hemorrhagic airway manikin model can be performed in a shorter time when a Yankauer suction tip is used than when a PVC catheter suction tip is used.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The damage control surgery, with emphasis on laparostomy, usually results in shrinkage of the aponeurosis and loss of the ability to close the abdominal wall, leading to the formation of ventral incisional hernias. Currently, various techniques offer greater chances of closing the abdominal cavity with less tension. Thus, this study aims to evaluate three temporary closure techniques of the abdominal cavity: the Vacuum-Assisted Closure Therapy - VAC, the Bogotá Bag and the Vacuum-pack. We conducted a systematic review of the literature, selecting 28 articles published in the last 20 years. The techniques of the bag Bogotá and Vacuum-pack had the advantage of easy access to the material in most centers and low cost, contrary to VAC, which, besides presenting high cost, is not available in most hospitals. On the other hand, the VAC technique was more effective in reducing stress at the edges of lesions, removing stagnant fluids and waste, in addition to acting at the cellular level by increasing proliferation and cell division rates, and showed the highest rates of primary closure of the abdominal cavity.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: the housing problem is global in scope. Solution to qualitative and quantitative housing deficit in Cuba has been addressed from various different perspectives. Several settlements in the country have been built with prefabricated industrial houses made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). These are known as petrohouses. Some studies have reported thermal stress inside these houses, resulting from insufficient ventilation and the heating of roofs exposed to the sun. Objective: carry out an environmental health evaluation of physical risk factors present in the indoor environment of petrohouses as compared with the outside environment after roof replacement. Method: an experimental evaluative study was conducted of physical risk factors present in the indoor environment of petrohouses based on a proposal of modification of the roof material with the purpose of reducing thermal stress. For this purpose, two petrohouses were built with the same orientation of their main facade, but different roof material. One was roofed with expanded polystyrene, while the other retained its original roof (aluminum sheets and asphalt paper). The following physical risk factors were evaluated comparatively: noise, magnetic component of the low frequency electromagnetic field, natural and artificial lighting, ventilation, and mainly microclimate, to evaluate the efficacy of the change made. Statistical evaluation was conducted with descriptors, regression models and bivariate power spectrum, using the statistical software packages SPSS v. 17.0 and Statistica v. 8.0. Results: indoor environment in the petrohouse with an aluminum-asphalt roof is somewhat more unfavorable in terms of thermal welfare than in the polystyrene-roofed house. Ventilation is deficient in both. Conclusions: roof replacement in petrohouses provides an indoor environment somewhat more favorable to the welfare of dwellers(AU)

ABSTRACT

A specially designed wire-reinforced endotracheal tube - the Fastrach silicone tube [FTST] designed to facilitate endotracheal intubation through intubating laryngeal mask airway [ILMA] are expensive and not readily available. Hence, it is worth considering alternative such as polyvinyl chloride tracheal tube [PVCT], which is disposable, cheap and easily available. The aim of the present study was to compare the clinical performance of FTST with conventional PVCT for tracheal intubation through ILMA. After informed consent, 60 ASA I-II adults with normal airway undergoing elective surgery were randomly allocated to undergo blind tracheal intubation through ILMA with a FTST or conventional PVCT. Overall success rate, ease of insertion, number of attempts for successful intubation, critical incidence during intubation and post-operative sore throat were compared. The overall success rate with FTST was 96.63% and 93.33% with PVCT; in addition, the first attempt success rate was 86.25% with FTST compared to 82.14% with PVCT. The time taken for intubation was 18.6 +/- 6.8 s. in FTST group and 22.42 +/- 8.5 s. in PVCT group. Incidence of sore throat was 21.42% in PVCT group compared with 6.89% in FTST group. Blind tracheal intubation through an ILMA with the conventional PVCT instead of FTST is a feasible alternative in patients with normal airways.

ABSTRACT

The anesthesiologist must be aware of the causes, diagnosis and treatment of venous air embolism and adopt the practice patterns to prevent its occurrence. Although venous air embolism is a known complication of cesarean section, we describe an unusual inattention that causes iatrogenic near fatal venous air embolism during a cesarean section under spinal anesthesia. One of the reasons for using self-collapsible intravenous (IV) infusion bags instead of conventional glass or plastic bottles is to take precaution against air embolism. We also demonstrated the risk of air embolism for two kinds of plastic collapsible intravenous fluid bags: polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polypropylene-based. Fluid bags without self-sealing outlets pose a risk for air embolism if the closed system is broken down, while the flexibility of the bag limits the amount of air entry. PVC-based bags, which have more flexibility, have signifi cantly less risk of air entry when IV administration set is disconnected from the outlet. Using a pressure bag for rapid infusion can be dangerous without checking and emptying all air from the IV bag.

ABSTRACT

The concern about preservation of anatomical specimens in existence for over 5000 years, since the use of anatomical parts, are indispensable for teaching and contribute for the improvement of applicative, assimilative skills and understanding of the discipline. This paper proposes better use of techniques in anatomy laboratories, to abolish the use of formaldehyde as preservative, allowing a pleasant environment for the practice of teaching/learning relationship. For this purpose, we used four anatomical techniques, (1) the cryodehydration, (2) glycerin conservation, (3) latex injection and (4) vinylite injection followed corrosion, we executed using dogs, cats and organs from donations. With cryodehydration and glycerin conservation the anatomical materials were considerably lighter than when kept in formaldehyde, odorless unlike in the use of formaldehyde and other preservatives. The structures to be studied were kept intact, easily to view, and the specimens could be stored in closed boxes without any liquid, thus remaining for up to 3 years. The Injection techniques (latex and vinylite followed by corrosion) showed total efficiency to inject filling systems, and allowed a clear view of all ramifications and paths of the circulatory system. The four anatomical techniques studied were shown to be sufficient to meet the needs of students to study anatomy due to the perfect disclosure of external and internal animal structures.

ABSTRACT

Because microaspiration of contaminated supraglottic secretions past the endotracheal tube cuff is considered to be central in the pathogenesis of pneumonia, improved design of tracheal tubes with new cuff material and shape have reduced the size and number of folds, which together with the addition of suction ports above the cuff to drain pooled subglottic secretions leads to reduced aspiration of oropharyngeal secretions. So we conducted a study to compare the prophylactic effects of polyurethane-cylindrical or tapered cuff and polyvinyl chloride cuff endotracheal tubes [ETT] on ventilator-associated pneumonia. This randomized clinical trial was carried out in a 12 bed surgical intensive care unit. 96 patients expected to require mechanical ventilation more than 96 hours were randomly allocated to one of three following groups: Polyvinyl chloride cuff [PCV] ETT, Polyurethane [PU] cylindrical Sealguard ETT and PU Taperguard ETT. Cuff pressure monitored every three hours 3 days in all patients. Mean cuff pressure didn't have significant difference between three groups during 72 hours. Pneumonia was seen in 11 patients [34%] in group PVC, 8 [25%] in Sealguard and 7 [21%] in Taperguard group. Changes in mean cuff pressure between Sealguard and PVC tubes and also between Taperguard and PVC tubes did not show any significant difference. There was no significant difference in overinflation between three groups. The use of ETT with PU material results in reducing ventilator-associated pneumonia compared to ETT with PVC cuff. In PU tubes Taperguard has less incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia compared to Sealguard tubes

ABSTRACT

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a widely used chemical for production of plastics. However occupational asthma (OA) caused by PVC has been reported only rarely. We report a 34-yr-old male wallpaper factory worker with OA due to PVC and nickel (Ni) whose job was mixing PVC with plasticizers. He visited the emergency room due to an asthma attack with moderate airflow obstruction and markedly increased sputum eosinophil numbers. A methacholine challenge test was positive (PC20 2.5 mg/mL). Bronchoprovocation tests with both PVC and Ni showed early and late asthmatic responses, respectively. Moreover, the fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) was increased after challenge with PVC. To our knowledge, this is the first case of OA in Korea induced by exposure to both PVC and Ni. We suggest that eosinophilic inflammation may be involved in the pathogenesis of PVC-induced OA and that FeNO monitoring can be used for its diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

This document is a methodological contribution, which is to present a protocol for developing a tenodesis type dynamic splint from a high temperature thermoplastic material, easy to achieve on the market called polyvinyl chloride, this type of splint is classified within the so-called dynamic splints and its purpose is to promote tripod pincer grip in people with injuries at C5-C6, present lack of mobility in the fingers but retain wrist movements. When the user extends the wrist, splint activates a series of mechanisms that produce passive flexion of metacarpophalangeal joints of fingers II and III and simultaneously there is a relative abduction and thumb opposition, these movements form a clamp that will provide the user the ability to perform basic activities with their hands.

ABSTRACT

Occurrence of cervical spineankylosis is rare, and intubation of patients with this condition can be difficult, particularly when fiberoptic laryngoscopy is not available. We performed successful endotracheal intubation in a 64-year-old male patient using a 7-mm cuffed polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tube with the help of a laryngeal mask airway (LMA). The LMA was initially used for rapid ventilation of the patient, and the guide wire was passed into the airway from the site of puncture of the cricothyroid membrane. This wire was easily observed in the LMA tube, and the use of long forceps was not required.

ABSTRACT

Based on non-enzymatic protein glycated reaction, the sodium periodate-oxidated low molecular weight heparin-antithrombin covalent complex (SPLMWATH) was produced. By using polyethyleneimine-glutaraldehyde bonding technique, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tubings were coated with SPLMWATH, heparin and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). Spectrophotometry and dynamic clotting time experiment were used to determine the synthetic ratio of SPLMWATH, graft density, coating leaching ratio and to evaluate the antithrombogenicity of different coating on the PVC tubings. The results showed that the synthetic ratio of SPLMWATH was approximately 55%, and compared with heparin coating and LMWH coating, the graft density of SPLMWATH coating on the PVC tubing was smaller, but its coating stability and antithrombogenicity were significantly better than that of heparin coating and LMWH coating on the PVC tubings.
